Skunk Extermination

Skunk Extermination

Skunks become nuisances when their burrowing and feeding habits conflict with people. They may burrow under porches or buildings by entering openings under the foundation. They dig holes in lawns, golf courses, and gardens to search for insect grubs found beneath the ground surface. Skunks have been known to kill poultry and eat eggs. Skunks may also disturb garbage or refuse left outdoors, and they carry many diseases such as rabies.

They are also known for the highly repellent musk they produce to defend themselves. When a skunk decides to spray, it raises its tail and expels a fine spray from its anal glands up to five meters.

With the nuisances caused by skunks, most people always find solutions to get rid of them from their garden or home. Therefore, below are the ways to exterminate skunks using both lethal and humane methods:

SHOOTING THE SKUNKS

This is a fast and easier method to exterminate skunks, and this requires having adequate gun handling skills, and careful observation of skunks’ presence. Though this method of killing skunks is recommended in rural areas where there is less human traffic, as this will prevent the accidental shooting of humans or other animals. You need to wear protective clothing to avoid having contact with the animal blood or saliva.

USE OF GAS CARTRIDGE

Using gas cartridges has been proven to be effective in exterminating skunks, especially the one that have carbon and sodium nitrate as active ingredients, this should be used like pesticides to fumigate the skunk dens. The toxic gases from the cartridge will suffocate and kill the skunks or other animals in the borrow. Just light the fuse and hold the cartridge until it is lit and producing smoke, then place the cartridge far enough into the burrow to avoid being smothered as you fill the hole. It is important to follow safety precautions to avoid fire hazards when used near buildings.

USE OF LIVE TRAPS

Skunks can be captured in live trap by setting the trap near the entrances of their den, and where there are many of them, set several traps to reduce the capture time. Use food baits such as sardines, peanut butter, chicken entrails or canned-fish flavored cat food to lure them into the trap. When they re caught in the trap, you may decide to release it to the wild or kill them by drowning inside water.

POISONING THE SKUNKS

However, this might be an inhumane method in exterminating skunk but it is effective in getting rid of skunks. Moreover, there are also some underlying challenges in using this method, this is because other animals or your pest might be killed after eating the poison meant for skunks. In addition, skunk might eat the poison and eventually die without you noticing until its body begin to decompose, and this might bring bad odor and germs to your home. Poisonous substances used on skunks include anticoagulants like warfarin, bromethalin, antifreeze (ethylene glycol), strychnine etc. you have be careful using this method to avoid poisoning your pets, also this should not be used where you have kids around.
